Crime Stoppers wants to help our community be a safer place and helping local law-enforcement on the Kenai Peninsula. A crime area of increasing awareness is that of animal cruelty and abuse.
Animal cruelty and neglect, has been shown to cross all social and economic boundaries and research suggests that animal abuse is common in both rural and urban areas.
Animal abuse is a crime committed against non-human animals and includes physical abuse, abandonment, neglect, sexual abuse, forced fighting, the withholding of basic needs to support healthy life and other crimes that cause harm to animals.
Animal abuse is a crime that often overlaps with crimes against humans. Research has shown that over 70% of domestic violence victims report that their abusers also abuse their pets. Often that pet abuse is carried out in front of children. In one study it was discovered that 88% of families under investigation for suspected child abuse were also abusing family pets.
The mission statement of the Kenai Peninsula is: “Crime Stoppers is comprised of diverse, active and dedicated community representatives. Crime Stoppers provides a method for local law enforcement to receive information on crimes. These efforts increase tips, which in turn increase arrests in our community.”
By including citizen reported tips of animal cruelty, abuse and force fighting to law enforcement, Crime Stoppers continues to help make the Kenai Peninsula a safer place.
